~(?<=number{-code-2}{)({-code-1}*?)(?=})~{-code-2}

Or you could ju{-code-2}t match on NOT}:

~(?<=number{-code-2}{)([^}]*)(?=})~

Not knowing all of you requirement{-code-2}, you may be able to {-code-2}implify it:

preg_match("~number{-code-2}{([^}]*)}~", $data, $re{-code-2}ult);
echo $re{-code-2}ult[1];

all regex engines suport many search modificators, like for caseInsensitive serch or multiLineSourse, try "m" modificator

preg_match("~(?<=numbers{)(.*?)(?=})~ms", $data, $result);
